Saṁmappadhānavibhaṅgasuttantabhājanīya

[479] "He generates zeal (chandaṃ janeti)": … "He endeavors (vāyamati)": … "He arouses energy (viriyaṃ ārabhati)": … "He exerts the mind (cittaṃ paggaṇhāti)": … "He strives (padahati)": Herein, what is striving (padhāna)? That which is the mental arousal of energy (viriyārambha) … right effort (sammāvāyāma) — this is called striving. He is endowed with this striving … possessed of it. Therefore it is said, "he strives."
