[589] The five-factored path (pañcaṅgika magga): right view (sammādiṭṭhi), right thought (sammāsaṅkappa), right effort (sammāvāyāma), right mindfulness (sammāsati), right concentration (sammāsamādhi).
Therein, what is the five-factored path? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducing to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion there is the five-factored path: right view, right thought, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.
Therein, what is right view? That which is wisdom, understanding, … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), right view, the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening (dhammavicayasambojjhaṅga), a path factor, included in the path — this is called right view.
Therein, what is right thought? That which is thinking, thought, intention, … a path factor, included in the path — this is called right thought.
Therein, what is right effort? That which is the arousing of mental energy (viriyārambha), … right effort, the energy factor of awakening (vīriyasambojjhaṅga), a path factor, included in the path — this is called right effort.
Therein, what is right mindfulness? That which is mindfulness, recollection (anussati), … right mindfulness, the mindfulness factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga), a path factor, included in the path — this is called right mindfulness.
Therein, what is right concentration? That which is stability of the mind (citta), … right concentration, the concentration factor of awakening (samādhisambojjhaṅga), a path factor, included in the path — this is called right concentration.
This is called the five-factored path. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the five-factored path.
