[717] Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the path (magga) for rebirth in the form [realm] (rūpūpapatti) and — with the stilling (vūpasama) of applied thought (vitakka) and sustained thought (vicāra) … — enters and dwells in the third jhāna [on] the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa): on that occasion there is the three-factored (tivaṅgika) jhāna — rapture (pīti), happiness (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the third jhāna; the remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna (jhānasampayuttā).
