[729] Here, when a bhikkhu develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttara jhāna) — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), going to the dismantling [of accumulation] (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): with the fading away of rapture (pīti) … he enters upon and dwells in the fourth jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion the jhāna has two factors: happiness (sukha) and one-pointedness (ekaggatā) of mind (citta). This is called the fourth jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
