[728] Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), tending to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, with the stilling of thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra), … enters and dwells in the third jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion there is the three-factored (tivaṅgika) jhāna: rapture (pīti), happiness (sukha), one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the third jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated (sampayutta) with the jhāna.
