[752] Therein, what is compassion (karuṇā)?
Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere (rūpūpapatti) and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures (kāmā), … enters and dwells in the first jhāna accompanied by compassion: whatever on that occasion is compassion, being compassionate, the state of being compassionate, the deliverance of mind that is compassion (karuṇā cetovimutti) — this is called compassion. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with compassion.

Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere and, with the stilling of applied thought (vitakka) and sustained thought (vicāra), … enters and dwells in the second jhāna accompanied by compassion: whatever on that occasion is compassion, being compassionate, the state of being compassionate, the deliverance of mind that is compassion — this is called compassion. The remaining phenomena are associated with compassion.
