[1729] Sakavādin: A gift (dāna) is purified only by the giver (dāyaka), not by the recipient (paṭiggāhaka)?
Paravādin: Yes.
S.: But are there not some recipients who are worthy of gifts (āhuneyya), worthy of hospitality (pāhuneyya), worthy of offerings (dakkhiṇeyya), worthy of reverential salutation (añjalīkaraṇīya), an unsurpassed field of merit (puññakkhetta) for the world?
P.: Yes.
S.: If there are some recipients who are worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world, then indeed it should not be said: "A gift is purified only by the giver, not by the recipient."
