[9] [Sakavādin:] If this [refutation of ours] is an ill-done refutation, then see likewise there, [in the refutation you made of us]: it should indeed be said that 'the person (puggala) is not apprehended (nūpalabbhati) in the real and ultimate sense (sacchikaṭṭha-paramaṭṭha)', yet it should not be said that 'that which is real and ultimate — that person is not apprehended in relation to it in the real and ultimate sense'; and we, who acknowledge thus therein by this acknowledgment (paṭiññā), ought not to be refuted thus by you. Yet you refute me; we are indeed ill-refuted, [namely by this refutation]: "If the person is not apprehended in the real and ultimate sense, then indeed, sir, it should be said that 'that which is real and ultimate — that person is not apprehended in relation to it in the real and ultimate sense.' What you say there — that it should indeed be said that 'the person is not apprehended in the real and ultimate sense', yet it should not be said that 'that which is real and ultimate — that person is not apprehended in relation to it in the real and ultimate sense' — is wrong. But if it should not be said that 'that which is real and ultimate — that person is not apprehended in relation to it in the real and ultimate sense', then indeed, sir, neither should it be said that 'the person is not apprehended in the real and ultimate sense.' What you say there — that it should indeed be said that 'the person is not apprehended in the real and ultimate sense', yet it should not be said that 'that which is real and ultimate — that person is not apprehended in relation to it in the real and ultimate sense' — this of yours is wrong."
