[1215] For whomever, wherever, the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) does not arise, will the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) of that one, there, not cease?
For those who have attained the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna) and for beings of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), at the moment of dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of the in-breaths and out-breaths (assāsa-passāsa), and for those same beings, at the moment of arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind (citta) without in-breaths and out-breaths, and for beings of the form sphere (rūpāvacara) and of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara) — for these, there, the bodily formation does not arise, but it is not the case that for them, there, the verbal formation will not cease. At the moment of dissolution of the final mind (pacchimacitta) accompanied by thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra); for those endowed with a final mind without thought-conception and discursive thought; for those immediately after whose mind the final mind without thought-conception and discursive thought will arise; for those who have attained the second jhāna or the third jhāna, at the moment of dissolution of the in-breaths and out-breaths, and for those same beings, at the moment of arising of a mind without in-breaths and out-breaths; for those who have attained the fourth jhāna; and for non-percipient beings (asaññasatta) — for these, there, the bodily formation does not arise, and the verbal formation will not cease.
Or rather: for whomever, wherever, the verbal formation will not cease, does the bodily formation of that one, there, not arise?
For those who have attained the second jhāna or the third jhāna, at the moment of arising of the in-breaths and out-breaths — for them, there, the verbal formation will not cease, but it is not the case that for them, there, the bodily formation does not arise. At the moment of dissolution of the final mind accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought; for those endowed with a final mind without thought-conception and discursive thought; for those immediately after whose mind the final mind without thought-conception and discursive thought will arise; for those who have attained the second jhāna or the third jhāna, at the moment of dissolution of the in-breaths and out-breaths, and for those same beings, at the moment of arising of a mind without in-breaths and out-breaths; for those who have attained the fourth jhāna; and for non-percipient beings — for these, there, the verbal formation will not cease, and the bodily formation does not arise.
