Nāmadhaṁnidadesa

Abhidhammapiṭaka · Yamaka (1) · Vol. 38 · Section 18

[18] Whatever phenomena (dhammā) are name (nāma), are all those name-roots (nāmamūla)? There are just nine name-roots; the remaining name phenomena are not name-roots. But whatever are name-roots, are all those phenomena name? Yes. Whatever phenomena are name, do all those have one root in common with the name-root? Rootless (ahetuka) name does not have one root in common with the name-root; name accompanied by roots (sahetuka) has one root in common with the name-root. But whatever have one root in common with the name-root, are all those phenomena name? Form (rūpa) originated by name has one root in common with the name-root but is not name; name both has one root in common with the name-root and is name. Whatever phenomena have one root in common with the name-root, are all those mutual roots with the name-root? Those name-roots that arise together both have one root in common and are mutual roots; the remaining phenomena arisen together with the name-roots have one root in common with the name-root but are not mutual roots. But whatever are mutual roots with the name-root, are all those phenomena name? Yes.
