Nāmadhaṁnidadesa

Abhidhammapiṭaka · Yamaka (1) · Vol. 38 · Section 19

[19] Whatever phenomena (dhammā) are name (nāma) — are they all name-root-roots (nāmamūlamūla)? There are only nine name-root-roots; the remaining phenomena that are name are not name-root-roots. Or, whatever are name-root-roots — are all those phenomena name? Yes. Whatever phenomena are name — do they all have a single root-root in common with the name-root (nāmamūla)? Rootless (ahetuka) name does not have a single root-root in common with the name-root; name with roots (sahetuka) has a single root-root in common with the name-root. Or, whatever have a single root-root in common with the name-root — are all those phenomena name? Form (rūpa) originated by name (nāmasamuṭṭhāna) has a single root-root in common with the name-root, but is not name; name both has a single root-root in common with the name-root and is name. Whatever phenomena have a single root-root in common with the name-root — do they all have mutual root-roots with the name-root? Whatever roots that are name-roots arise together — they both have a single root-root in common and have mutual root-roots; the remaining phenomena co-arisen with the name-root have a single root-root in common with the name-root, but do not have mutual root-roots. Or, whatever have mutual root-roots with the name-root — are all those phenomena name? Yes.
