[787] For whomever the eye base (cakkhāyatana) arose, will the ear base (sotāyatana) cease for that one?
For those attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the formless (arūpa), and for those who, having been reborn in the formless, will attain final Nibbāna, as they are passing away — for these the eye base arose, but the ear base will not cease for them. For the others, the eye base arose and the ear base will cease.
Or rather, for whomever the ear base will cease, did the eye base arise for that one?
Yes (āmantā).
Just as, in the Cessation Section (nirodha-vāra), the questions of the future combined with the past have been analyzed — the 'yassa' ("for whom") [portion], the 'yattha' ("wherein") [portion], and the 'yassa yattha' ("for whom, wherein") [portion], both positive (anuloma) and negative (paccanīya) — so too, in [the section on] arising and cessation (uppāda-nirodha), the questions of the future combined with the past should be analyzed.
