[746] "For whomever the eye base (cakkhāyatana) arises, has that one's ear base (sotāyatana) ceased?"
"Yes."
"Or rather, for whomever the ear base has ceased, does that one's eye base arise?"
"For all who are passing away, and for those without the eye who are being reborn, their ear base has ceased, but their eye base does not arise. For those possessing the eye who are being reborn, their ear base has ceased and their eye base arises."
Just as, in the section on arising (uppādavāra), the questions pairing the past with the present have been analyzed, so too, in [the section on] arising-and-cessation (uppādanirodha), the questions pairing the past with the present should be analyzed, both in the positive mode (anuloma) and in the negative mode (paccanīya).
