[653] For whomever the eye base (cakkhāyatana) has ceased, will the ear base (sotāyatana) cease for him?
For those who are attaining final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) in the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra), for those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the formless realm (arūpa), and for those who, having been reborn in the formless realm, will attain final Nibbāna, as they are passing away — for these the eye base has ceased, but the ear base will not cease for them. For the others, both the eye base has ceased and the ear base will cease.
Or, for whomever the ear base will cease, has the eye base ceased for him?
Yes (āmantā).
