[588] For whomever, wherever, the eye base (cakkhāyatana) ceases — has the ear base (sotāyatana) of that one there ceased?
For those attaining final Nibbāna in the Pure Abodes (Suddhāvāsa), their eye base ceases there, but their ear base has not ceased there. For the others, who possess the eye and are passing away, their eye base ceases there and their ear base has ceased.
Or, for whomever, wherever, the ear base has ceased — does the eye base of that one there cease?
For those being reborn into the five-constituent [plane] (pañcavokāra), and for those without the eye who are passing away from the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), their ear base has ceased there, but their eye base does not cease there. For those who possess the eye and are passing away, their ear base has ceased there and their eye base ceases.
