[623] For whomever, wherever, the eye base (cakkhāyatana) ceases, will the ear base (sotāyatana) cease for that one there?
For those attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent (pañcavokāra) plane, the eye base ceases for them there, but the ear base will not cease for them there. For the others—those with the eye who are passing away—for them there both the eye base ceases and the ear base will cease.
Or, for whomever, wherever, the ear base will cease, does the eye base cease for that one there?
For those being reborn into the five-constituent plane, and for those without the eye who are passing away from the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the ear base will cease for them there, but the eye base does not cease for them there. For those with the eye who are passing away, for them there both the ear base will cease and the eye base ceases.
