[237] Bhikkhus, here in a certain residence, on the day of the Invitation (pavāraṇā), several resident bhikkhus assemble—five or more. They know: "There are other resident bhikkhus who have not come." Intent on schism, thinking, "May they be lost, may they perish—what use is there in them?", they perform the Invitation. While they are performing the Invitation, then other resident bhikkhus arrive, greater in number. Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus must perform the Invitation again; for those who have (already) given the Invitation, there is an offense of wrong-doing of the grave class (thullaccaya). … Then other resident bhikkhus arrive, exactly equal in number … fewer in number. Those who have given the Invitation have given it well; the remainder should give the Invitation; for those who have (already) given the Invitation, there is an offense of thullaccaya.
