[1697] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is defiled and connected with defilement is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is not defiled but connected with defilement: proximity decisive support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive support: In dependence on lust (rāga), one gives a gift (dāna), undertakes virtue (sīla), performs the uposatha observance, gives rise to jhāna … insight (vipassanā) … gives rise to superknowledge (abhiññā), gives rise to an attainment (samāpatti). In dependence on aspiration (patthanā), one gives a gift, gives rise to an attainment.
Lust … aspiration is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition, for faith (saddhā), for bodily pleasure, for bodily pain.
Having killed a living being, in order to counteract that, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, gives rise to jhāna, gives rise to insight, gives rise to superknowledge, gives rise to an attainment. Having caused a schism in the Saṅgha, in order to counteract that, one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance.
Unwholesome kamma is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition, for the result (vipāka).
