[279] A phenomenon (dhamma) without thought and with mere examination (avitakka-vicāramatta) is a condition, by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon with thought and with examination (savitakka-savicāra): object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) that is without thought and with mere examination, one gives a gift (dāna), undertakes virtue (sīla), performs the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), arouses jhāna with thought and with examination, insight (vipassanā) … the path (magga) … arouses an attainment (samāpatti), conceives conceit (māna), grasps a view (diṭṭhi).
In dependence on virtue that is without thought and with mere examination … learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā) … thought (vitakka), one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, arouses jhāna with thought and with examination, arouses insight, arouses the path, arouses an attainment, kills a living being, causes a schism in the Saṅgha.
Faith that is without thought and with mere examination … virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom … and thought are a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith that is with thought and with examination, for aspiration (patthanā).
