[280] A phenomenon (dhamma) without thought-conception, with discursive thought only (avitakka-vicāramatta), is a condition (paccaya) for a phenomenon without thought-conception and without discursive thought (avitakka-avicāra) by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): proximity-decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) that is without thought-conception, with discursive thought only, one gives rise to jhāna that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought; the path (magga) … superknowledge (abhiññā) … one gives rise to an attainment (samāpatti). In dependence on virtue (sīla) that is without thought-conception, with discursive thought only, … on learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā), … on thought-conception (vitakka), one gives rise to jhāna that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought; the path … superknowledge … one gives rise to an attainment.
Faith that is without thought-conception, with discursive thought only, … virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom, … and thought-conception are a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought, for virtue, for learning, for generosity, for wisdom, and for discursive thought (vicāra), for bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha), for bodily pain (kāyika dukkha).
