[338] In dependence on a phenomenon (dhamma) that is not a taint (āsava), there arises a phenomenon that is not a taint, not by root condition (na-hetupaccayā): in dependence on one rootless (ahetuka) aggregate (khandha) that is not a taint, three aggregates and mind-originated form (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa) arise; in dependence on two aggregates … rootless rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), up to the non-percipient beings (asaññasattā). In dependence on the eye base (cakkhāyatana), eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa) arises; in dependence on the body base (kāyāyatana), body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa) arises; in dependence on the base (vatthu), the rootless aggregates that are not taints arise.
In dependence on a phenomenon that is not a taint, there arises a phenomenon that is a taint, not by root condition: in dependence on the aggregates accompanied by doubt (vicikicchā), accompanied by restlessness (uddhacca), and on the base, there arises delusion (moha) accompanied by doubt, accompanied by restlessness.
