[597] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is a hindrance (nīvaraṇa) is a condition for a phenomenon that is a hindrance by immediacy condition (anantara-paccaya): Earlier and earlier hindrances are a condition for later and later hindrances by immediacy condition. The root should be asked (mūlaṃ pucchitabbaṃ). Earlier and earlier hindrances are a condition for later and later aggregates (khandhā) that are not hindrances by immediacy condition.
