Abhidhammapiṭaka · Paṭṭhāna (3) · Vol. 42 · Section 643

[643] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is both a hindrance (nīvaraṇa) and subject to hindrances (nīvaraṇiya) is a condition, by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is both a hindrance and subject to hindrances: Taking hindrances as object, hindrances arise. The root (mūla) should be asked about. Taking hindrances as object, aggregates (khandhā) that are subject to hindrances but not hindrances arise. The root should be asked about. Taking hindrances as object, hindrances and the associated (sampayutta) aggregates arise. A phenomenon that is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance: A gift (dāna) … virtue (sīla) … having performed the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), one reviews it, relishes it, delights in it; taking that as object, lust (rāga), wrong view (diṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), restlessness (uddhacca), and grief (domanassa) arise. Things well done in the past … From jhāna … The noble ones review change-of-lineage (gotrabhū); purification (vodāna) … the defilements (kilesa) that have been abandoned … the defilements that have been suppressed … those formerly indulged in … The eye … the (heart-)base (vatthu) … one contemplates with insight the aggregates that are subject to hindrances but not hindrances as impermanent (aniccato) …, relishes them, delights in them … grief … with the divine eye … It should be done as far as adverting (āvajjana). A phenomenon that is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is both a hindrance and subject to hindrances: A gift … virtue … the uposatha observance … things well done in the past … from jhāna … the eye … the (heart-)base … one relishes and delights in the aggregates that are subject to hindrances but not hindrances; taking that as object, lust, wrong view, doubt, restlessness, and grief arise. A phenomenon that is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is both a hindrance and subject to hindrances and for a phenomenon that is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance: A gift … virtue … the uposatha observance … things well done in the past … from jhāna … the eye … the (heart-)base … one relishes and delights in the aggregates that are subject to hindrances but not hindrances; taking that as object, hindrances and the associated aggregates arise. In the same way the other three should also be done. Predominance (adhipati) is similar to object [condition]. Prenascence (purejāta), too, is similar to object [condition]. In decisive support (upanissaya), too, the supramundane (lokuttara) should not be included. Abridged. It should be elaborated in this way. As with the hindrance dyad (nīvaraṇa-duka), so should it be done, having considered [each case]. The Hindrance and Subject-to-Hindrances Dyad (nīvaraṇa-nīvaraṇiya-duka) is finished. ________________ The Hindrance and Associated-with-Hindrances Dyad (nīvaraṇa-nīvaraṇasampayutta-duka) The Dependent Section (paṭiccavāra)
