[399] Conditioned by a phenomenon (dhamma) that is clinging (upādāna), a phenomenon that is clinging arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): conditioned by clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna), clinging to sensuality (kāmupādāna) [arises]. The three [cases] are similar to those of the Dependent [Chapter] (paṭicca).
Conditioned by a phenomenon that is not clinging, a phenomenon that is not clinging arises by root condition: conditioned by one aggregate (khandha) that is not clinging, [there arise] three aggregates and mind-originated form (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa); [conditioned by] two aggregates … at the moment of rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi), conditioned by the aggregates, [continue] as far as the internal primary elements (mahābhūta); conditioned by the base (vatthu), [there arise] aggregates that are not clinging.
