[404] While he was undertaking mānatta, he fell into one offense (āpatti) in the interval—an intentional emission of semen (sañcetanikā sukkavisaṭṭhi), unconcealed. He informed the bhikkhus: "Friends, I fell into one offense—an intentional emission of semen—concealed for five days. I asked the Saṅgha for five days' probation (parivāsa) for that one offense, an intentional emission of semen, concealed for five days. The Saṅgha granted me five days' probation for that one offense, an intentional emission of semen, concealed for five days. While I was undergoing probation, I fell into one offense in the interval—an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. I asked the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning (mūlāya paṭikassanā) on account of that one offense in the interval, an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. The Saṅgha sent me back to the beginning on account of that one offense in the interval, an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. Having completed probation and being worthy of mānatta, I fell into one offense in the interval—an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. I asked the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning on account of that one offense in the interval, an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. The Saṅgha sent me back to the beginning on account of that one offense in the interval, an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. Having completed probation, I asked the Saṅgha for six nights' mānatta for the three offenses. The Saṅgha granted me six nights' mānatta for the three offenses. While undertaking mānatta, I fell into one offense in the interval—an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed. How, then, should I proceed?"
Those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha, having sent the bhikkhu Udāyī back to the beginning on account of that one offense in the interval—an intentional emission of semen, unconcealed—grant him six nights' mānatta."
