[483] But here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu deserving penance (mānatta) becomes a novice (sāmaṇera) … he becomes insane … he becomes deranged in mind … he is afflicted by feeling (vedanā) … he is suspended for not seeing an offense … he is suspended for not making amends for an offense … he is suspended for not relinquishing a bad view. Bhikkhus, the giving of penance to one who is suspended is not valid. If he is later reinstated, that very former giving of probation (parivāsa) stands for him. The probation that was given is well given; that which has been observed is well observed. Penance should be given to that bhikkhu.
