[579] Bhikkhus, here again, a bhikkhu commits many saṅghādisesa offenses — some limited in number, some unlimited … some distinct, some mixed. He requests the Saṅgha for combined probation (samodhānaparivāsa) for those offenses. The Saṅgha grants him combined probation for those offenses. While he is undergoing probation, he commits in the interim many saṅghādisesa offenses, limited in number, concealed … limited in number, some concealed and some unconcealed. He requests the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning (mūlāya paṭikassana) on account of the interim offenses. The Saṅgha sends him back to the beginning on account of the interim offenses with a formal act (kamma) that is not in accordance with the Dhamma, reversible, unfit to stand, and grants combined probation not in accordance with the Dhamma. Thinking, "I am undergoing probation," he commits in the interim many saṅghādisesa offenses, limited in number, some concealed and some unconcealed. Standing at that stage, he remembers the interim offenses among the earlier offenses, and he remembers the interim offenses among the later offenses. It occurs to him: "I committed many saṅghādisesa offenses — some limited in number, some unlimited … some distinct, some mixed. I requested the Saṅgha for combined probation for those offenses; the Saṅgha granted me combined probation for those offenses. While undergoing probation, I committed in the interim many saṅghādisesa offenses, limited in number, some concealed and some unconcealed. I requested the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning on account of the interim offenses; the Saṅgha sent me back to the beginning on account of the interim offenses with a formal act not in accordance with the Dhamma, reversible, unfit to stand, and granted combined probation not in accordance with the Dhamma. What if I were to request the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning on account of both the interim offenses among the earlier offenses and the interim offenses among the later offenses, with a formal act in accordance with the Dhamma, irreversible, fit to stand — for combined probation in accordance with the Dhamma, for penance (mānatta) in accordance with the Dhamma, for rehabilitation (abbhāna) in accordance with the Dhamma." He requests the Saṅgha for a sending back to the beginning on account of both the interim offenses among the earlier offenses and the interim offenses among the later offenses, with a formal act in accordance with the Dhamma, irreversible, fit to stand — for combined probation in accordance with the Dhamma, for penance in accordance with the Dhamma, for rehabilitation in accordance with the Dhamma. The Saṅgha sends him back to the beginning on account of both the interim offenses among the earlier offenses and the interim offenses among the later offenses with a formal act in accordance with the Dhamma, irreversible, fit to stand; it grants combined probation in accordance with the Dhamma; it grants penance in accordance with the Dhamma; it rehabilitates him in accordance with the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu is purified of those offenses.
