[499] On account of defaming (anuddhaṃsana) a bhikkhu with a charge of an offense entailing defeat (pārājika), taking as a mere pretext some point of a legal issue (adhikaraṇa) belonging to a different category, he falls into three offenses: not having had the opportunity granted [by him], intending to make him fall away [from the monkhood], he speaks — an offense of saṅghādisesa together with one of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); having had the opportunity granted, intending to revile, he speaks — an offense of insulting speech (omasavāda).
