[9] "Where was the saṅghādisesa (saṅghādisesa) for one who, having made an effort, emits semen laid down by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One?" — "It was laid down at Sāvatthī." — "Concerning whom?" — "Concerning the Venerable Seyyasaka." — "On account of what matter?" — "On the matter of the Venerable Seyyasaka's emitting semen having made an effort with his hand."
"Is there therein a laying-down (paññatti), a supplementary laying-down (anupaññatti), a laying-down for what had not arisen (anuppannapaññatti)?" — "There is one laying-down, one supplementary laying-down; there is therein no laying-down for what had not arisen."
"Is it a laying-down for everywhere, or a laying-down for a particular region?" — "A laying-down for everywhere."
"Is it a laying-down held in common, or a laying-down not held in common?" — "A laying-down not held in common."
"Is it a laying-down for one side, or a laying-down for both sides?" — "A laying-down for one side."
"Of the five recitations of the Pātimokkha, into which is it plunged, in which is it included?" — "It is plunged into the introduction (nidāna), included in the introduction."
"By which recitation does it come up for recitation?" — "It comes up for recitation by the third recitation."
"Of the four failures (vipatti), which failure is it?" — "A failure of virtue."
"Of the seven classes of offenses, which class of offense is it?" — "The class of offense of saṅghādisesa."
"Of the six originations of offenses, by how many originations does it originate?" — "It originates by one origination: it originates from body and from mind (citta), not from speech."
"Of the four legal issues (adhikaraṇa), which legal issue is it?" — "A legal issue concerning an offense."
"Of the seven settlements, by how many settlements is it settled?" — "It is settled by two settlements: by proceeding in the presence and by acting upon acknowledgment."
"What therein is the Vinaya, what therein is the higher Vinaya (abhivinaya)?" — "The laying-down is the Vinaya; the analysis is the higher Vinaya."
"What therein is the Pātimokkha, what therein is the higher Pātimokkha (adhipātimokkha)?" — "The laying-down is the Pātimokkha; the analysis is the higher Pātimokkha."
"What is failure?" — "Non-restraint is failure."
"What is success?" — "Restraint is success."
"What is the practice?" — "That, undertaking it for as long as life lasts, to the end of one's breath, thinking, 'I will not do such a deed,' one trains in the training rules."
"In dependence on how many reasons was the saṅghādisesa for one who, having made an effort, emits semen laid down by the Blessed One?" — "In dependence on ten reasons was the saṅghādisesa for one who, having made an effort, emits semen laid down by the Blessed One: for the excellence of the Saṅgha, for the comfort of the Saṅgha, for the restraint of ill-behaved persons, for the comfortable abiding of well-behaved bhikkhus, for the restraint of taints (āsava) pertaining to the present life, for the warding off of taints pertaining to future lives, for the gaining of confidence by those without confidence, for the increase of those who have confidence, for the establishment of the true Dhamma, for the support of the Vinaya."
"Who train?" — "Trainees (sekha) and virtuous ordinary persons train." — "Who have completed the training?" — "Arahants have completed the training." — "Where is it established?" — "It is established among those who desire the training." — "Who preserve it?" — "Those for whom it applies, they preserve it." — "Whose word is it?" — "It is the word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One." — "By whom was it handed down?" — "It was handed down by succession.
Upāli, and Dāsaka,
Soṇaka, likewise Siggava,
with Moggaliputta as the fifth —
these were in the [land] called glorious Jambu.
Then Mahinda, Iṭṭiya,
and Uttiya, and Sambala,
…
These nāgas of great wisdom,
knowers of the Vinaya, skilled in the path,
proclaimed the Vinaya Piṭaka
in the island of Tambapaṇṇi."
