[280] With three modes … [a bhikkhu knowingly speaks a deliberate lie, saying:] "He who used your robe, he who used your almsfood, he who used your lodging, he who used your requisite of medicines as a support for the sick; he by whom your dwelling was used, he by whom your robe was used, he by whom your almsfood was used, he by whom your lodging was used, he by whom your requisite of medicines as a support for the sick was used; he on account of whom you gave a dwelling, gave a robe, gave almsfood, gave a lodging, gave a requisite of medicines as a support for the sick — that bhikkhu attained, attains, has attained the first jhāna … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna in an empty dwelling (suññāgāra); that bhikkhu is an obtainer of, a master of, the fourth jhāna in an empty dwelling; by that bhikkhu the fourth jhāna has been realized in an empty dwelling" — for one speaking thus, a deliberate lie, when the other understands, there is an offense of thullaccaya; when the other does not understand, an offense of dukkaṭa. [The modes are:] before speaking, he knows, "I am about to speak a lie"; while speaking, he knows, "I am speaking a lie"; having spoken, he knows, "a lie has been spoken by me"; misrepresenting his view, misrepresenting his conviction, misrepresenting his approval, misrepresenting his actual state.
