[279] By three modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — that bhikkhu attained, attains, has attained the first jhāna; that bhikkhu is an obtainer of, a master of, the first jhāna; by that bhikkhu the first jhāna has been realized" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense (thullaccaya); if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa): before [speaking] he knows, "I shall speak a lie"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking a lie"; having spoken he knows, "A lie has been spoken by me." By four modes, by five modes, by six modes, by seven modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — that bhikkhu attained, attains, has attained the first jhāna; that bhikkhu is an obtainer of, a master of, the first jhāna; by that bhikkhu the first jhāna has been realized" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense; if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing: before [speaking] he knows, "I shall speak a lie"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking a lie"; having spoken he knows, "A lie has been spoken by me"; misrepresenting his view, misrepresenting his acceptance, misrepresenting his preference, misrepresenting his state. By three modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — that bhikkhu attained, attains, has attained the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the emptiness liberation … the signless liberation … the undirected liberation … the emptiness concentration (samādhi) … the signless concentration … the undirected concentration … the emptiness attainment … the signless attainment … the undirected attainment … the three true knowledges (vijjā) … the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) … the four right strivings … the four bases of spiritual power … the five faculties … the five powers … the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) … the noble eightfold path … the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-returning … the fruit of non-returning … the fruit of arahantship; that bhikkhu is an obtainer of, a master of, the fruit of arahantship; by that bhikkhu the fruit of arahantship has been realized" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense; if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing. … By three modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — by that bhikkhu lust has been renounced … hatred has been renounced … delusion has been renounced, disgorged, released, abandoned, relinquished, cast out, completely cast out" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense; if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing. … By three modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — that bhikkhu's mind (citta) is unobstructed by lust, his mind is unobstructed by hatred, his mind is unobstructed by delusion" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense; if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing: before [speaking] he knows, "I shall speak a lie"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking a lie"; having spoken he knows, "A lie has been spoken by me"; misrepresenting his view, misrepresenting his acceptance, misrepresenting his preference, misrepresenting his state. By three modes, when one speaks a deliberate lie, saying: "The bhikkhu who lived in your dwelling — that bhikkhu attained, attains, has attained the first jhāna, the second jhāna, the third jhāna, the fourth jhāna in an empty dwelling; that bhikkhu is an obtainer of, a master of, the fourth jhāna in an empty dwelling; by that bhikkhu the fourth jhāna in an empty dwelling has been realized" — if the person addressed understands, there is a grave offense; if he does not understand, there is an offense of wrong-doing: before [speaking] he knows, "I shall speak a lie"; while speaking he knows, "I am speaking a lie"; having spoken he knows, "A lie has been spoken by me"; misrepresenting his view, misrepresenting his acceptance, misrepresenting his preference, misrepresenting his state.
