[477] [In the case of a woman] protected by penalty (saparidaṇḍā): he by whom the penalty has been set sends a bhikkhu, [saying]: "Go, venerable sir, tell [the person] named so-and-so: 'May [she] be the wife of [the man] named so-and-so — a wife bought with money, and a wife dwelling [with him] by her own desire, and a wife dwelling [with him] for the sake of wealth, and a wife dwelling [with him] for the sake of cloth, and a wife [taken] by the water-bowl [ceremony], and a wife whose head-pad has been removed, and one who is both a slave and a wife, and one who is both a servant and a wife, and one carried off under the flag, and a momentary wife.'" [The bhikkhu] accepts, ascertains, and reports back: he commits an offence entailing saṅghādisesa.
