[115] "The people of Sunāparanta, Puṇṇa, are fierce; the people of Sunāparanta, Puṇṇa, are rough. If, Puṇṇa, the people of Sunāparanta abuse and revile you, what will you think then, Puṇṇa?"
"If, venerable sir, the people of Sunāparanta abuse and revile me, then I shall think thus: 'Excellent indeed are these people of Sunāparanta, truly excellent are these people of Sunāparanta, in that they do not give me a blow with the hand.' Thus it will be for me in that case, Blessed One; thus it will be for me in that case, Sugata."
"But if, Puṇṇa, the people of Sunāparanta give you a blow with the hand, what then will you think, Puṇṇa?"
"If, venerable sir, the people of Sunāparanta give me a blow with the hand, then I shall think thus: 'Excellent indeed are these people of Sunāparanta, truly excellent are these people of Sunāparanta, in that they do not give me a blow with a clod of earth.' Thus it will be for me in that case, Blessed One; thus it will be for me in that case, Sugata."
"But if, Puṇṇa, the people of Sunāparanta give you a blow with a clod of earth, what then will you think, Puṇṇa?"
"If, venerable sir, the people of Sunāparanta give me a blow with a clod of earth, then I shall think thus: 'Excellent indeed are these people of Sunāparanta, truly excellent are these people of Sunāparanta, in that they do not give me a blow with a stick.' Thus it will be for me in that case, Blessed One; thus it will be for me in that case, Sugata."
"But if, Puṇṇa, the people of Sunāparanta give you a blow with a stick, what then will you think, Puṇṇa?"
"If, venerable sir, the people of Sunāparanta give me a blow with a stick, then I shall think thus: 'Excellent indeed are these people of Sunāparanta, truly excellent are these people of Sunāparanta, in that they do not give me a blow with a knife.' Thus it will be for me in that case, Blessed One; thus it will be for me in that case, Sugata."
"But if, Puṇṇa, the people of Sunāparanta give you a blow with a knife, what then will you think, Puṇṇa?"
"If, venerable sir, the people of Sunāparanta give me a blow with a knife, then I shall think thus: 'Excellent indeed are these people of Sunāparanta, truly excellent are these people of Sunāparanta, in that they do not deprive me of life with a sharp knife.' Thus it will be for me in that case, Blessed One; thus it will be for me in that case, Sugata."
