[1083] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, developing the five faculties (pañcindriyāni), cultivating the five faculties, become one who slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), which is based upon seclusion (viveka), based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment (vossaggapariṇāmi); he develops the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration (samādhi), and the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), which are based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, developing the five faculties, cultivating the five faculties, becomes one who slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna.
