Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Mahāvaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 19 · Section 246

[246] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu who is heedful (appamatta) develop the noble eightfold path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga) and cultivate the noble eightfold path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi) based on seclusion (viveka), based on dispassion (virāga), based on cessation, maturing in relinquishment (vossaggapariṇāmi) … he develops right concentration (sammāsamādhi) based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu who is heedful develops the noble eightfold path and cultivates the noble eightfold path." (The following three suttas should be elaborated in the same way.)
