[263] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu (bhikkhu) who is heedful (appamatta) develop the Noble Eightfold Path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga) and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi), based upon seclusion (viveka), based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation (nirodha), maturing in relinquishment (vossaggapariṇāmi) … he develops right concentration (sammāsamādhi), based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu who is heedful develops the Noble Eightfold Path and cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path.
The Chapter on Heedfulness (Appamādavagga) is completed.
Its summary verse (uddāna):
The Tathāgata, the footprint, the peak,
the root, with the heartwood,¹ the jasmine,
the king, the moon and the sun,
and with the cloth as the tenth item.
