[285] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, by developing the noble eightfold path, by cultivating the noble eightfold path, cause evil, unwholesome states, whenever they arise, to vanish on the spot and subside? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … develops right concentration (sammāsamādhi), dependent on seclusion (viveka), dependent on dispassion (virāga), dependent on cessation, maturing in release (vossaggapariṇāmī). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, by developing the noble eightfold path, by cultivating the noble eightfold path, causes evil, unwholesome states, whenever they arise, to vanish on the spot and subside.
