[287] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, developing the noble eightfold path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga), cultivating the noble eightfold path, make evil, unwholesome states, whenever they have arisen, disappear and subside right in mid-course? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … develops right concentration (samādhi) (sammāsamādhi), which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, developing the noble eightfold path, cultivating the noble eightfold path, makes evil, unwholesome states, whenever they have arisen, disappear and subside on the spot, right in mid-course."
