[354] Bhikkhus, it is for the direct knowledge (abhiññā), for the full understanding (pariññā), for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters (uddhambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni) … that this Noble Eightfold Path should be developed. And what is the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops right view … develops right concentration (samādhi) — which has the removal of lust as its final goal, the removal of hatred as its final goal, the removal of delusion as its final goal; which merges in the Deathless (amata), has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its final goal; which slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna. Bhikkhus, it is for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these five higher fetters … that this Noble Eightfold Path should be developed.
The Chapter on the Flood (Oghavagga).
Its summary verse (uddāna):
Flood, bond, clinging,
tie, and with underlying tendency;
strands of sensual pleasure, hindrances (nīvaraṇa),¹
aggregates, and the lower and higher [fetters].
