[769] "Friend Bhadda, those wholesome virtues (sīla) that have been spoken of by the Blessed One — these wholesome virtues have been spoken of by the Blessed One only insofar as they conduce to the development (bhāvanā) of the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). Of which four? Here, friend, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. He dwells contemplating … in feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Friend Bhadda, those wholesome virtues that have been spoken of by the Blessed One — these wholesome virtues have been spoken of by the Blessed One only insofar as they conduce to the development of these four establishments of mindfulness."
