[850] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), do not understand the origin of the faculty of faith, do not understand the cessation of the faculty of faith, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the faculty of faith; do not understand the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya) …; do not understand the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya); do not understand the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya); do not understand the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), do not understand the origin of the faculty of wisdom, do not understand the cessation of the faculty of wisdom, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the faculty of wisdom — those ascetics or brahmins, bhikkhus, are not reckoned by me as ascetics among ascetics or as brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge in this very life, enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood.
