[912] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand the eye faculty (cakkhundriya), do not understand the origin of the eye faculty, do not understand the cessation of the eye faculty, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the eye faculty; do not understand the ear faculty (sotindriya), the nose faculty (ghānindriya), the tongue faculty (jivhindriya), the body faculty (kāyindriya), the mind faculty (manindriya); do not understand the origin of the mind faculty, do not understand the cessation of the mind faculty, do not understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the mind faculty — these, bhikkhus, I do not acknowledge [as ascetics among ascetics or as brahmins among brahmins] … nor do [those venerable ones, in this very life,] having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge (abhiññā), enter upon and dwell [in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood].
