[851] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brāhmaṇas understand the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), understand the origin of the faculty of faith, understand the cessation of the faculty of faith, and understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the faculty of faith; understand the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya), understand the origin of the faculty of energy, understand the cessation of the faculty of energy, and understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the faculty of energy; understand the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya) …; understand the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya) …; understand the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), understand the origin of the faculty of wisdom, understand the cessation of the faculty of wisdom, and understand the way of practice leading to the cessation of the faculty of wisdom — those ascetics or brāhmaṇas, bhikkhus, are regarded as ascetics among ascetics and as brāhmaṇas among brāhmaṇas; and those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves with direct knowledge, in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood.
