[146] **"A month of the hot season remains: a bhikkhu may seek a rains-bathing cloth robe (vassikasāṭikacīvara)"** means: having approached those people who in the past also gave rains-bathing cloth robes, they may be addressed thus: "It is the time for a rains-bathing cloth; it is the season for a rains-bathing cloth; other people too are giving rains-bathing cloth robes." They should not be told: "Give me a rains-bathing cloth robe; bring me a rains-bathing cloth robe; exchange something for a rains-bathing cloth robe for me; procure a rains-bathing cloth robe for me."
**"A half-month of the hot season remains: having made it, he may wear it"** means: when a half-month of the hot season remains, having made it, it may be worn.
**"If earlier than that, with a month of the hot season remaining"** means: if he seeks a rains-bathing cloth robe when more than a month of the hot season remains, it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya). **"If earlier than that, with a half-month of the hot season remaining"** means: if he makes it and wears it when more than a half-month of the hot season remains, it becomes subject to forfeiture. It is to be relinquished to a Saṅgha, to a group, or to an individual.
"And thus, bhikkhus, it should be relinquished … 'Venerable sirs, this rains-bathing cloth robe of mine, sought when more than a month of the hot season remained, made and worn when more than a half-month of the hot season remained, is subject to forfeiture. I relinquish it to the Saṅgha' … 'should give it back' … 'should give it back' … 'I give it to the venerable one.'"
