[93] 3. Bhikkhus, possessing eight qualities a bhikkhu is unloved and disagreeable to his fellows in the holy life, neither respected nor esteemed. What eight? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu praises those who are not dear and blames those who are dear; he is desirous of gain and desirous of honor; he is without moral shame (hirī) and without moral dread (ottappa); he has evil desires and wrong view. Possessing these eight qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is unloved and disagreeable to his fellows in the holy life, neither respected nor esteemed.
Bhikkhus, possessing eight qualities a bhikkhu is dear and agreeable to his fellows in the holy life, respected and esteemed. What eight? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu does not praise those who are not dear and does not blame those who are dear; he is not desirous of gain and not desirous of honor; he has moral shame and moral dread; he is of few desires and holds right view. Possessing these eight qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is dear and agreeable to his fellows in the holy life, respected and esteemed.
