[181] Which phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path (magga) for rebirth in the form realm (rūpūpapatti) and, not percipient of form internally (ajjhattaṃ arūpasaññī), sees forms externally, limited — "Having mastered them, I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ), limited (parittaṃ), with a limited object (parittārammaṇaṃ): on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form realm and, not percipient of form internally, sees forms externally, limited — "Having mastered them, I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, measureless (appamāṇaṃ), with a limited object: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome?
