[184] Which phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere (rūpūpapatti) — when, not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally, measureless, and, mastering them, [is aware:] "I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ): on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere — when, not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally, measureless, and, mastering them, [is aware:] "I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and quick direct knowledge (khippābhiññaṃ): on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere — when, not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally, measureless, and, mastering them, [is aware:] "I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of pleasant practice (sukhāpaṭipadaṃ) and sluggish direct knowledge: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere — when, not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally, measureless, and, mastering them, [is aware:] "I know, I see" — and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … one enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are wholesome. Which phenomena are wholesome? On the occasion when one develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere — when, not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally, measureless, and, mastering them, [is aware:] "I know, I see" — and, with the subsiding of applied thought and sustained thought (vitakka-vicāra) … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the first jhāna … one enters and dwells in the fifth jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge … of painful practice and quick direct knowledge … of pleasant practice and sluggish direct knowledge … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are wholesome.
