[218] Which, on that occasion, is right speech (sammāvācā)? That which on that occasion is the desisting (ārati) from the four kinds of verbal misconduct (vacīduccarita), the abstaining (virati), the refraining (paṭivirati), the abstention (veramaṇī), the non-doing (akiriyā), the non-committing (akaraṇa), the non-transgression (anajjhāpatti), the not overstepping the limit (velā-anatikkama), the demolition of the bridge (setughāta); right speech that is a factor of the path (maggaṅga), included in the path — this, on that occasion, is right speech.
