[583] Therein, what is right speech (sammāvācā)? That which, in regard to the four kinds of misconduct by speech (vacīduccarita), is desisting (ārati), abstinence (virati), refraining (paṭivirati), abstention (veramaṇī), non-performance (akiriyā), non-doing (akaraṇa), non-committing (anajjhāpatti), non-transgression of the limit (velā-anatikkama), demolition of the causeway (setughāta) — right speech that is a factor of the path (maggaṅga), included in the path (maggapariyāpanna): this is called right speech.
