[178] Therein, what is right speech (sammāvācā)? That which, with regard to the four kinds of verbal misconduct (vacī-duccarita), is the shunning (ārati), abstinence (virati), refraining (paṭivirati), abstention (veramaṇī); the non-doing, the not performing, the non-committing, the not overstepping the limit; the destruction of the causeway (setughāta); right speech, a factor of the path (maggaṅga), included in the path (maggapariyāpanna) — this is called right speech.
